First Generation
My name is Michael Greco, I’m first generation in agriculture. Born and raised in Saugerties, NY between the foot of the eastern Catskill mountains and the Hudson River and where I still call home. My path into agriculture is quite different from the typical one. I was not born into ag by any means but was born in an area that has a long history of agriculture.
I grew up loving the outdoors and when I was around 21 years old I traveled the country living out of a van for a short while. This I believe was the beginning of what led me to where I’m at today. Right around this same time I had started becoming aware of where my food was coming from and how it was being produced. For a few years I had pretty much quit eating meat other than fish because I didn’t like the way much of the food we eat was raised and produced. I had also fallen for the “meat is bad for the planet” scheme. It was a little while later that I started coming across farms and ranches producing food that not only gave back to the land but was improving the health of ecosystems. As I began learning more I had an urge to find a way into agriculture but wasn’t sure exactly how to do so. Agriculture isn’t where many go to get rich - it’s the way of life that many fall in love with. I knew I wanted to work with livestock and not so much vegetables so I visited a sheep farm in Delhi who I am now good friends and that was what sparked my interest in sheep.
My goal is to work with the land, build connection, and live with intention. It’s to raise and care for livestock with ethical management and to work with a holistic and regenerative approach that gives back to the land, soil and water, while providing local families with nutrient dense meat.
It’s about being a part of returning our food system to local farmers and ranchers. It’s about community and bridging the gap between buyer and producer so we can shake the hands of who raises and buys our food. It’s about rebuilding a connection with what we eat and knowing it was raised with compassion, love and care. It’s about land stewardship and working as a part of the ecosystem rather than against it. It’s about slowing down and paying attention. It’s about hard honest work that requires grit and love. It’s about thinking small and close to the heart. And It’s about caring deeply for something and working hard for it.
I look forward to raising food you can share with your family.
